OSHA: Our Focus on Caregiver Safety

Exposure Risk Classification (Infection Control)

Each employee will be notified of their OSHA job exposure risk classification.

This classification will be stated in the employee’s job description, contract, or caregiver agreement (as appropriate).This ensures that all personnel (staff, caregivers, contractors) are fully informed of the potential occupational exposure risks associated with their role and the corresponding safety measures required.

Heavy Lifting
(Company Guidelines)
  • Caregivers will follow their applicable job description for the weight limit of lifting of more that 25lbs.

    • This includes lifting of clients, items in the home, trash, etc.

  • Caregivers will, at no time, attempt to lift, move, or reposition a client that exceeds the weight limit of 25 lbs without appropriate equipment or a second person to assist.

  • Caregivers must use the available equipment at all times that may include, but not be limited to, slide boards, gait belts, handrails, etc.

  • Caregivers providing services under agencies with PSA licensing are not allowed to operate a Hoyer lift or sit-to-stand
    lift unless checked off at client’s home using client’s designated lift by designated office personnel.

  • Caregivers will notify agency management for any change in client’s condition that may require additional equipment or personnel in order to safely lift, move, or reposition client.

  • Caregivers must notify management if said employee needs additional in-service or training on transfers, lifting and positioning of clients/patients, as well as the use of applicable equipment such as, but not limited to: Hoyer lifts, slide boards, and gait belts.

Unsafe Environments
  • Caregivers must promptly report any unsafe condition, concern, or incident to management, including risks to client safety, their own safety, or the safety of others.

  • Reporting concerns helps ensure timely action and prevents harm.
